Frequently Asked Questions

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is a type of internet service that allows the creation of a website that is accessible via the internet to everyone.

Hosting (also known as website hosting or Web hosting) is the business of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more websites. In a sense, you rent space on a computer to hold your website. Your host, the computer where your website files are stored, assigns an address (DNS) for your files to your domain name so that anyone can find your website on the Internet by typing in your domain name.

How Do I Create Email Accounts in CPanel?

By default, you have no email account set up. The main username may look like it is setup as an email, but if you wish to use it, you will need to add it as an email account. The video and instructions below will guide you through creating an email account in cPanel.

To create an email account:

  • 1. Log into your cPanel Account.
  • 2. In the Mail section, click Email Accounts.
  • 3. In the Email field, type the name you want and select the domain name from the adjacent drop-down menu.
Note: The email name shadow is reserved and cannot be used for an email address.
  • 4. In the Password fields, type the desired password twice.
  • 5. Make a selection for Mailbox Quota.
  • 6. Click Create Account.

The same steps work for creating email accounts for your primary domain, addon domains and subdomains. You cannot create email accounts with a script or via SSH.

Send Only Email (do-not-reply addresses)

Advanced email users will sometimes need a “Do not reply” email address (such as forum moderators that need an address to send notifications). The following steps will allow you to disable incoming email for an address, if you do not need SMTP access to that address you may skip the steps above. To disable incoming mail for an address:

  • 1. Log into cPanel.
  • 2. In the Mail section, click Forwarders.
  • 3. Under Email Account Forwarders click Add Forwarder.
  • 4. On the Add a New Forwarder page:
a). Enter the email name and select the domain for the address.
b). Select Discard and send an error to the sender (at SMTP time).
c). Enter the failure message you would like users to receive.
Note: If you do not wish for users to receive an error message, click Advanced Options and select Discard (Not Recommended).
  • 5. Click Add Forwarder.

How to access my Email through CPanel?

There are several ways to read your email. Normally, users will go to yourdomainname.com/webmail and log in your full email address (e.g. [email protected]).

If you are the administrator and would like to access different email accounts through the cPanel, you may do the following:

  • 1. Click on the Email Accounts icon (not the Webmail icon!).
  • 2. Find the email account you wish to access in the list of email accounts.
  • 3. To the right of the email account you want to access, click on More, and then click on Access Webmail.
  • 4. A new page asking for your password will appear. Enter the correct password. (If you need to force your way in, you can reset the email password with the Change Password link on the previous page.)
  • 5. Click on the webmail application that you would like to use.

    a.) SquirrelMaill
    b.) Horde
    c.) RoundCube
  • 6. You have now accessed your email through cPanel.

Important Note:
The Webmail icon in cPanel does NOT take you to the email accounts you created for yourself and your users. Instead, it shows you the default email account for your hosting account where server messages are sometimes sent. Follow the directions above to use webmail for your email accounts.

What is a Domain?

Your domain name is the name of your site or your url (e.g. www.mynewcompany.com).

A domain is a series of alphanumeric characters used to identify websites. It is your name or business name on the internet that will be known on the world wide web. It must be a unique name to set it apart from all other domain names on the web. (e.g. GoManilaHost LLC domain name is the www.gomanilahost.net)

What is the difference between Domains vs Hosting vs Website?

When you have a site visitor, they use your domain name to view your website. As simple as it seems, there is a process that occurs from the time that the site visitor types in your domain and presses enter.

When a site visitor enters your domain name into a browser, the domain is then translated into your server IP address, then the server sends that user your site files, which their browser represents to them as a typical web-page.You can see that, without each of these 3 elements, you won’t really have a web-site.

The three basic parts that make up any current day website are:

  • Domain Names
  • Web-Hosting Servers
  • Site Files

Domain Names
Computers communicate by using numbers, called IP addresses, to contact each other, much like you use a phone number to dial a specific person’s phone. Domain names on the internet are much like entries in a phone book. The phone book tells people looking for a business what the entries are just as a domain tells people (i.e. their computers) that a domain is hosted on the server.

Without a domain, you would have to tell your customers that your site is located at a temporary url such as 123.456.789.123/~mysite instead of using a domain name such as mysite.com, making your site appear unprofessional and impractical.

Web-Hosting Servers
The web-hosting or server is much like the space that you rent out to have your business in. It’s merely the space itself. It does not include furnishings like shelves for your products, just as the web-hosting account doesn’t include a site for you to sell your products.

Luckily, in the web-hosting world, it’s very easy to furnish the space provided by your host, because you can install many framework applications through the Softaculous icon within your cPanel.

Without the hosting services, you won’t have a place for your files to reside, so your domain would then become like a disconnected phone number in the phone directory, and your site files would have nowhere to stay.

Site Files
The site files are what your visitors and potential customers actually see when going to site such as your products and services. The site files are the same as any other file you normally use, like a .jpg photograph, or .mp3 music file. Though, website files are also .php files or .html files, which are PHP scripts or html pages respectively.

The web-hosting server knows how to read these files, which explain how the webpage looks or instruct the server to do a series of computations. These computations are things like figuring out what blog article it’s supposed to send back to the viewer, or what forum post it’s supposed to send back.

What domain name extension should I get?

Generally, both individuals and enterprises are free to choose which domain extension they want to use for their websites. There is really no clear cut answer to who should use which. Nonetheless, some TLDs have just become more popular for specific uses or industries.

.COM – is the most popularly used gTLD. It may be used for both commercial and personal use.
.NET – though there are no rules, this domain extension is more often used by internet companies.
.ORG – if you belong to a non-profit organization or a trade association and you want to set up your own website, this is the recommended domain extension for you.
.INFO – if you want your website to be known as place to find informational resources, then it would be the best TLD.
.BIZ – as the name suggests, this is mostly used for commercial and business purposes.

Using Country Code Top-Level domains like gTLDs have no definite rules as domain extensions. However, those who choose to use ccTLDs are usually individuals or organizations which products or website resources are particularly targeted to a specific country. Domain owners may benefit from using country specific domain extensions using improved local search engine rankings and a stronger relationship with local clients.
